For the first time in a half a century, Berlin’s Nationalgalerie presented a comprehensive solo show of portrait painter Anton Graff (1736–1813) from October 2013 to February 2014 at Alte Nationalgalerie.
In the words of philosopher Johann Georg Sulzer, portraitist Anton Graff’s mastery involved “looking into the soul” of his subjects. This very prolific artist was one of the most outstanding portraitists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His great achievement was to portray famous figures of his era. We owe to him the panorama of German thought that includes portraits of the most important poets and thinkers of his day, like Lessing, Nicolai, Mendelssohn, Sulzer, Wieland, Gellert, Herder, and Schiller.
