With Impressionism – Expressionism. Art at a Turning Point, Nationalgalerie presented a unique exhibition project at Alte Nationalgalerie in the summer of 2015 that for the first time explored a comparison of the two styles.
Berlin’s Nationalgalerie was one of the first museums around the world to acquire impressionist paintings, as early as 1896. In 1919, a large collection of expressionist works was added to the museum’s holdings. In the comprehensive show at Alte Nationalgalerie, the similarities and differences between the two art styles were explored, art styles that were already bitingly compared to one another in the early twentieth century. Around 16 impressionist and expressionist masterpieces by primarily German and French artists from the Nationalgalerie and museums around the world were shown in this exhibition.
