Sky Art Event

On the evening of July 19, 2014, as part of the exhibition Otto Piene. More Sky a spectacular sky art event took place outside Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie. Three illuminated air sculptures in the form of a star, Berlin Superstar, Paris Star and Cereus Star, lit up Berlin’s night sky in an impressive way.
At 5 pm, the 90-meter high inflatable sculptures were filled with air on the roof of Neue Nationalgalerie. At 10 pm, the individual sculptures floated up into the sky.
Since the early evening, almost 5000 viewers had gathered to enjoy the unusual spectacle.
Due to Piene’s sudden death before the Sky Art Event, the spectacle became a posthumous homage to the artist and gave Berlin “the loveliest public art viewing since Christo’s veiling of the Reichstag” (Tagesspiegel).
